How to buy a second-hand bike?

You have to transfer the ownership from the seller to your name when you buy a used bike. For this reason, you have to ask the past owner to hand over the relevant documents to you. You must notify the RTO to obtain the transfer vehicle registration certificate by submitting these documents to them. This certificate would give you legal possession immediately over the vehicle. You have to furnish attested photocopies with all of these documents to change the insurance details of the policy. You have to transfer the insurance of the two-wheeler on your name. Original registration certificate

This is the document that stands as a proof for the registration of your bike. You should also verify whether the details mentioned in the RC book about the current owner and the motorcycles are accurate or not.

Form 28, 29 and 30

Form 28 is the no-objection certificate which is popularly known as NOC. The seller should submit 3 copies of form 28 to the RTO. Form 29 is the notice of transfer of motor vehicle ownership by which it notifies the RTO about the sale of the bike. The seller is supposed to submit 2 copies of form 29, one for the RTO office and another copy is for your reference. Form 30 serves as an intimation of transfer of a motorcycle’s ownership. Sales receipt, road tax certificate and transfer deed

The sales receipt with the vendor’s signature acts as the proof document of the sale. The road tax certificate card lists the payment information of the road tax. It proves that the seller has followed perfect taxation on time and there are no pending dues on the bike. The transfer deed provides the proof that the seller has no longer any legal claims over the bike. The transfer deed should mention the details of the engine number, registration number, the name, address and ID number of both the buyer and the seller, chassis number. After affixing the revenue stamps, get the deed signed by the vendor to make it admissible evidence according to law.

Valid address proof, identity proof and insurance certificate

Usually, PAN or aadhaar card and driving license are sufficient as a proof of identity. Get the original document of the policy and details of the paid premiums. The RTO will not register your two-wheeler, without the certificate of insurance.
